There's so many cafes in Melbourne, new ones seem to be popping up every day. We like cafes and we like coffee. This site aims to uncover some of these great places.

Riding through the grounds of Melbourne Uni today, I came across this neat little coffee stop. Two wide brown umbrellas up, students laughing and ordering coffee. I had to get off my bike then and have a closer look.

Cafe latte in a cardboard take-away cup = $3.00. I’m given a large playing card: 4 of Diamonds in this case. You wait until your card is announced, then, you pick up your coffee and place your card in one of three holders: Environment, Charity, Owner. This will designate where 100% of the profit made on your coffee goes.

The coffee quality itself? It could’ve been hotter, but the blend was smooth and the latte well made.

I like the sense of fun in the idea, and that people were enjoying themselves as well as helping an important cause of their choosing. The location, in the grounds of Melbourne Uni, was well chosen — a sort of enclosed area, by the trees, shrubs and paving.

  1. Is that where Brunetti’s used to have an outlet, since closed?

  2. Hmmm… I don’t actually know. I really only just stumbled across kerekere by accident.

  3. I think it’s a new location; I’ve never seen anything there before.
The staff are friendly, the coffee blend a bit different to the nearby cafes (such as Baretto, Blueprint) but entirely enjoyable and well made.

The great idea of deciding where the profit goes to has generated a lot of interest end enthusiasm for the business. Certainly it seems better than giving over all of your money for someone to buy themselves a new Porsche! (and hey, if it works out so the owners do that, that’s fine with me, because they will have helped a whole lot of people on the way).

  4. kerekere is more than just a clever coffee company – it’s an effective initiative that makes a real difference to people on a moment-by-moment AND global-perspective scale, that’s what this is. It’s powerful and inspiring that people are responding to this creative approach to levelling the impacts of capitalism. We all benefit.

  5. It’s also worth noting that the baristas are part of a Fifteen-style training programme for disadvantaged youth.

It’s completely inspirational and the coffee is good as a bonus!

    Congratulations James!
